When you are in the process of selecting a contractor, there are many good questions to ask during your initial interviews. Here are the questions we feel will bring you the most important information as your begin your contractor/client relationship. Be sure to read our checklist for your next construction project, too.

	What do you charge for your services?
	Do you guarantee a maximum cost?
	Are you familiar with local codes and requirements?
	How do you provide for safety and security during construction?
	How do you handle design changes during construction?
	What do you charge for changes during construction?
	How long will it take to complete my project?
	Can you guarantee your estimated completion date?
	What services and guarantees do you provide after I occupy the building?
	When can you start working on my project?
	Could I have a blank copy of your standard contract so I can review it? (Have your attorney read the blank contract and advise you.)

Before the contract is signed and prior to any groundbreaking, here is a checklist for your next construction project:

Pre-plan the details.

Check references, visit completed projects and call the Better Business Bureau.

Complete your specifications.

Begin selecting your foundation right up to the doorknobs, fittings and fixtures.

Review a documented progress schedule.

Set a payment schedule. Discuss your options.

Have only written change orders. Verbal change orders are not advisable and will not serve you well.
